ZNOART Leads Clean-Up Charge in Gweru, Urges Sustained Community Efforts

GWERU, ZIMBABWE – The Zimbabwe National Organization of Associations and Residents Trust (ZNOART) mobilized its members in a significant clean-up operation in Gweru, Midlands province, earlier this month, marking their participation in the country’s monthly National Day of Cleaning.

The collective effort, which focused on key areas of the city, was organized in collaboration with the City of Gweru on November 7th. It underscores a growing push by civil society organizations to address urban cleanliness and waste management challenges across Zimbabwe.

Mr. Reward Mhuri, the ZNOART Chairperson, emphasized the organization’s commitment to the national initiative, which sees citizens and organizations dedicate time to sprucing up their surroundings every first Friday of the month.

“Indeed, ZNOART honors this day of national cleaning,” Mr. Mhuri told reporters. He, however, stressed that environmental stewardship should be a daily responsibility, not just a monthly event.

“I advise people to clean their communities wherever they stay. It’s not that people should come to gatherings, but people must always keep their environment clean,” Mhuri stated, reflecting the sentiment that continuous vigilance is key to a healthier city.

He concluded his remarks with a time-honored adage to reinforce the importance of their work: “Cleanliness is next to godliness.”

The National Day of Cleaning, instituted by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2018, aims to foster a culture of responsible waste disposal and sustainable environmental management, moving the country toward the goal of a clean, safe, and healthy environment. ZNOART’s involvement highlights the increasing collaboration between resident bodies and local authorities in this national endeavor.
