Harare, Zimbabwe -Richard Musiyadzaanikwa, the National Organizing Secretary of the Zimbabwe Independent Movement, has issued an urgent call for political reforms as the country gears up for the 2028 elections.

His rallying cry, “No Reforms, No Election,” reflects a deep-seated recognition of Zimbabwe’s fraught history, which has been shaped by colonialism, liberation struggles, and ongoing socio-economic challenges.

In an exclusive interview with this publication Musiyadzaanikwa highlighted that, despite achieving independence in 1980 after nearly a century of British rule, Zimbabwe’s post-independence era has been plagued by authoritarian governance, economic turmoil, and widespread human rights violations.

“Reforms are crucial to address these enduring issues,” he stated, emphasizing the need for a transformative agenda before the next electoral cycle.

The Zimbabwe Independent Movement underscored three key areas requiring immediate reform:

  • Electoral Reform: Ensuring the integrity of the electoral process is paramount, as free, fair, and transparent elections are vital to reflect the true will of the Zimbabwean populace.
  • Constitutional Reform: Strengthening institutions to enhance accountability and safeguarding individual rights is essential for fostering a robust democracy.
  • Economic Reform: Addressing the nation’s economic malaise involves fostering growth, tackling inequality, and improving living standards for all citizens, particularly the marginalized.

Musiyadzaanikwa pointed to Zimbabwe’s contentious land reform program, initiated in 2000, as emblematic of the pressing need for reform. While the program aimed to rectify historical injustices, it was marred by violence and a lack of transparency, raising questions about the efficacy of governmental actions and policies.

“The ‘No Reforms, No Election’ stance is a clarion call for meaningful change,” Musiyadzaanikwa stated. “For Zimbabwe to thrive democratically and economically, we must prioritize reform.” He asserts that a commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusivity is imperative for the country to move toward a more just and prosperous future.

The National Organizing Secretary outlined the movement’s next steps, which include building a broad coalition of stakeholders to advocate for reforms and engage in constructive dialogue with the government and other political parties. This coalition aims to develop a comprehensive reform agenda that addresses the critical electoral, constitutional, and economic challenges facing Zimbabwe.

As Zimbabwe continues to confront deep-seated socio-economic problems and a political landscape fraught with tension, the call for reform may resonate deeply with an electorate eager for change. Musiyadzaanikwa’s message embodies a collective aspiration: together, Zimbabweans can forge a path towards a brighter future, reclaiming their voice and agency in the democratic process.

As the countdown to the 2028 elections begins, the clarity of this call for reform comes at a crucial time, potentially shaping the future trajectory of a nation long in search of stability and justice.
