Zimbabwe is grappling with a troubling increase in murder cases, predominantly driven by escalating domestic disputes and social tensions.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police have issued a stark warning in response to a notable rise in violent incidents across the nation, reflecting deepening interpersonal and societal conflicts.
Recent reports indicate a disturbing trend: violence stemming from extramarital affairs, property disputes, and unresolved marital disagreements has surged.
Incidents at social gatherings, including bars, and disputes over debt and witchcraft accusations further contribute to the growing crisis.
The situation has become dire, with police revealing heart-wrenching cases involving minors, aged seven to seventeen, who have tragically killed each other during seemingly innocent activities.
“We are witnessing a disturbing trend where minor disagreements escalate into fatal violence, leading to tragic consequences,” said National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

One particularly harrowing case from Bigest Farm, Tengwe, involves Liberty Chimurambi, 28, who allegedly murdered his estranged wife, Aphocine Mandimutsa, 24, before taking his own life.
The bodies were discovered in separate locations, prompting an extensive investigation into the incident. “Investigations have revealed that the couple was estranged and had a dispute over infidelity,” Comm. Nyathi added.
In Nyameni, Marondera, Ezekiel Chibvongodze, 29, is accused of stabbing his wife, Mitchel Evelyn Katakwe, 25, and their five-year-old son, Tawana Chibvongodze, during a domestic argument. The suspect fled but turned himself in the following day.
Another case at Jeche Primary School, Sadza, involved Memory Choga, 41, who was arrested for fatally assaulting her husband, Douglas Choga, 45, with a log. This attack reportedly resulted from a misunderstanding over financial matters.
Authorities are also seeking Disco Mubonesi, 29, in connection with the death of his aunt, Mandawani Muponesi, 60, in Chipinge. Mubonesi is accused of setting fire to his aunt’s home and causing her fatal injuries, following accusations of witchcraft.
In Plumtree, Senge Ncube, 45, died from injuries sustained during an altercation at Mbali Business Centre. Ncube was found severely injured by the roadside and succumbed to his injuries at Plumtree Hospital.
According to ZIMSTATS, the police recorded 221,704 offences from January to March 2024, an increase of 108 cases from the previous quarter. The national crime rate has slightly risen to 1,460.6 crimes per 100,000 people, from 1,459.9.
“In light of these troubling developments, we urge the public to assist law enforcement by providing any pertinent information,” Comm. Nyathi said.
He emphasized the need for peaceful conflict resolution and urged religious and traditional leaders to foster dialogue and respect for human life. Authorities are calling on anyone with relevant information to contact the National Complaints Desk or submit tips via WhatsApp.
