Woodlands Residents Urged To Stop Littering Drainage Channels

By Connect Stories Reporter

The River Valley Group of Companies has expressed concern over the increasing practice of dumping litter in sewer and storm drains in the residential suburb of Woodlands Phase II.

River Valley Group, Chief Executive Officer, Dr Smelly Dube, has called on residents to halt this rampant habit, which often leads to blockages and flooding.

Dr Dube highlighted the detrimental consequences of improper waste disposal, saying: “It is disheartening when you find items such as blankets, shoes, and disposable diapers dumped in run-off water channels. This is despite our efforts to re-open and desilt storm drains during rainy seasons and to raise awareness of the dangers posed by careless litter dumping.”

While acknowledging that local authorities are facing challenges in waste management and refuse collection, Dr Dube encouraged residents to find better and more environmentally friendly ways of disposing of their litter.

The River Valley Group of Companies emphasized the importance of correct waste disposal, as well as recycling and reusing whenever possible.

Taking action in response to the growing litter problem, the River Valley Group will organize a clean-up exercise to remove the litter that has been dumped in the drainage channels of Woodlands Phase II. The group invited residents to join the initiative, which will be scheduled for a later date.

River Valley Group of Companies notes with concern the rampant practice of dumping foreign objects in sewer and storm drains in Woodlands Phase II residential suburb. We have observed that residents dump household waste into drainage channels and this often results in blockages and flooding. We have noticed that due to drainage channel blockages, run-off water is forced to flow across the roads causing damage to the infrastructure. It is disheartening when you find items such as blankets, shoes and disposable diapers dumped in run-off water channels. This is despite our efforts to re-open and desilt storm drains during rainy seasons and to raise awareness of the dangers posed by the careless litter dumping. While we acknowledge that local authorities are facing waste management challenges leading to irregular refuse collection, we would like to call upon residents in Woodlands to find better and environmentally friendly ways to dispose off their litter. This involves ensuring that they put litter in the right places. We also encourage recycling and re-use where possible. Going forward, River Valley Group will conduct a clean up exercise to in Woodlands Phase II remove litter dumped in drainage channels on a date to be announced. We call upon residents to join us in the clean up exercise. River Valley Group reiterates it’s commitment to a clean, safe and sustainable environment.
