The Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) has expressed deep concerns regarding the security and safety of domestic observers who have been subjected to threats and pressure to re-sign V11 forms at polling stations.

This disturbing trend persists despite the recent release of detained staff, as ZESN continues to receive reports of intimidation and threats against its dedicated employees.

In a statement on observers and staff safety,  the independent electoral watchdog , highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, “We are extremely concerned about the security of our observers who have been targeted and coerced into resigning their duties at polling stations. These acts not only violate the law, but they also undermine the integrity of the electoral process.” wrote ZESN

Observers play a central role in ensuring the fairness and transparency of democratic processes. Their impartial assessment of electoral procedures is vital in upholding democracy.

However, ZESN’s worries have been compounded by the recent calls received by numerous observers across the country, instructing them to re-sign V11 forms – a crucial component of the election process.

“These calls demanding the resignation of observers and tampering with V11 forms are not only illegal but also unwarranted. They undermine the very essence of democratic practices,” asserted the watchdog.

The legislative framework on elections mandates that V11 forms be sealed in boxes containing election residue once the appropriate processes have been carried out. These boxes should remain sealed, unless a recount is specifically requested or ordered by the Court during an election petition. This safeguard ensures the accuracy and credibility of the electoral outcomes.

ZESN continues to call upon the government to prioritize the safety and security of observers while they perform their duties. It emphasizes the need for adherence to the legislative framework and the fulfillment of regional, continental, and international obligations in relation to election observation.

“As an organization committed to promoting democracy, we firmly urge the government to fulfill its responsibilities and ensure the well-being of our observers. It is imperative that they can carry out their duties without fear of intimidation or threats,” emphasized ZESN

While facing setbacks in their domestic observation mission, ZESN  renewed their appeal for peace as the country awaits the announcement of the results by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

” It is essential to create a conducive environment that nurtures democracy and respects the efforts of all stakeholders involved in the electoral process,” Underscored the electoral watchdog.
