In a remarkable display of grit, determination, and sacrifice, Bwerehwenga Secondary School’s Under-15 Boys Soccer Team secured a historic victory in the Shurugwi District Football Competition on Friday.
Despite being without the proper sporting resources, the team from rural Shurugwi North defied the odds by defeating urban schools at Shurugwi Number 2 High School ( Magwavha Stadium) , earning a spot in the Provincial Competitions to be held at Chaplin High School in Gweru on June 28.
The journey to victory was not without its challenges. Teachers had to contribute financially and donate food to enable the team to participate in the District competitions.
Bwerehwenga Players kicked their way to victory some of them barefooted, vulnerable to injuries and blisters from the rough”Magwavha” stadium.
However, their triumph was marked by several impressive performances.
In the first match, a moment of magic from Tinotenda Msindo, who unleashed a stunning scissors kick from a corner, sealed a 1-0 victory over Shurugwi Number 2 High School
Undaunted, the team pressed on, with Emmanuel Machenjedze’s counter-attacking goal securing another 1-0 triumph over Gare Secondary School.
The semi-final clash against Hanke Mission saw the teams locked at 1-1 after regulation time, but Bwerehwenga held their nerve, emerging victorious 6-5 in the penalty shootout.
The final hurdle was Chrome High School, and despite being reduced to 10 men in the first half, the Bwerehwenga lions refused to be cowed.
The match ended 0-0, but in the decisive penalty shootout, they emerged triumphant 9-8, clinching the under-15 Shurugwi District Championship.
The school’s community rallied behind the team, with over 60 learners paying $2 each to travel and cheer for their counterparts. This collective effort was crucial in the team’s success.
The Coaches, lesley Simango, Edgar Chikondo and The School sports Director Edith Zhou Played a crucial role in guiding the team to victory.
As Coach Lesley Simango reflected on their journey, “We are grateful for the support we received from our community. It was a collective effort that led to our victory. We hope that well-wishers will come forward to help us progress to the next level.”
The team’s captain, Prince Tsanangurai, echoed Coach Simango’s sentiments, “We are proud of what we have achieved, but we know that we need more to reach our full potential. We hope that our story will inspire others and that we will receive the support we need to succeed,” he said.
Bwerehwenga Secondary School team’s remarkable victory serves as a testament to the power of determination and community spirit in the face of adversity. As they look to the future, they hope that their story will inspire others and that they will receive the support they need to continue their journey to success.
Now the Bwerehwenga Under 15 boys Soccer Team is seeking support from well-wishers to help them progress to the Provincial Competitions . The team is in dire need of transport, food, shooters, and other sporting paraphernalia. Any donations would be greatly appreciated to help the team achieve their goals.
