Journalists in Gweru were recently called upon to be vigilant and protect one another in order to safeguard their safety and security while fulfilling their duties.

The plea for unity and support was made by seasoned journalist and Media Institute of Southern Africa board of trustees member, Cris Chinaka, during a Press Discussion held at the Gweru Memorial Library.

“We are each other’s keepers, it is our duty to watch out for one another and ensure each other’s safety before reaching out for external assistance. We owe it to each other to provide protection,” Chinaka emphasized.

He also underscored the significance of upholding professionalism in the field of journalism, stating that professionalism serves as the fundamental defense of media space.

Highlighting the crucial role of the media as the fourth estate in society, Chinaka expressed that people rely on the media for valuable information. “The freedom of expression is contingent upon professionalism. The media serves as an essential pillar in society, serving as the reliable source of information for the public,” he remarked.

Moreover, Chinaka delved into the necessity of media literacy in journalism and encouraged journalists to seek safe environments in case of threats. He advised handling challenging situations with composure and professionalism, advocating for a retreat to a secure location if needed.

Tariro Shonhiwa, an avid researcher from the Zimbabwe Media Commission provided reassurance to journalists, promising their support and urging them to report any instances of victimization.

She stressed the significance of practicing peace journalism to foster peace and reconciliation in society.

Organized by the MISA Gweru Chapter leadership, the discussion served as a reminder of the criticality of journalists prioritizing safety, professionalism, and camaraderie in their line of work.

The media was heralded as an indispensable pillar of democracy, with a plea for journalists to stand united, protect each other, and uphold the ethos of journalism.
