Gokwe, Zimbabwe- In the remote village of Mutukani under Chief Chireya, a heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded as a desperate young family embarked on a perilous river crossing to seek medical aid for their newborn baby.

Simbarashe Kanyonde, 27, his wife Lucia Dzimba, 23, and their 7-day-old daughter lost their lives when their canoe capsized in the tumultuous currents of the overflowing Sanyati River.

For rural communities like Mutukani, the rainy season brings not just heavy showers, but also life-threatening challenges.

As rivers swell with torrential downpours, access to vital services such as schools, hospitals, and essential supplies becomes obstructed.

These impassable waterways transform into treacherous obstacles, forcing villagers to take life-threatening risks in their quest for a better life, while the rest of the world forges ahead.

Grim statistics underscore the severity of the situation. Over the past five years, an alarming number of rural Zimbabweans have perished while attempting to cross these violent rivers.

The recent incident involving the Kanyonde family serves as a painful reminder of the dire circumstances endured by rural communities during the rainy season.

Unbeknownst to the couple as they embarked on their journey to Chidamoyo Hospital, their only hope for their ailing newborn, their attempt to navigate the treacherous river would result in devastating loss.

Found downstream, Lucia Dzimba was discovered clinging to her baby, lifeless, as courageous villagers tirelessly scour the riverbanks for victims of these harrowing incidents.

The coordinated efforts of the locals and ZRP Nembudziya allowed for the recovery of two bodies, which were subsequently transferred to the mortuary at Gokwe North District Hospital.

However, the search for Simbarashe Kanyonde continues, as family, friends, and neighbors band together in an unwavering quest to find him.

The anguish of a young father’s disappearance casts an even darker shadow of sorrow and uncertainty over the grieving community.

In light of this heart-wrenching event, the Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko has appealed fervently to the public, imploring them refrain from attempting to cross flooded rivers at all costs.

“We urge members of the public to desist from crossing flooded rivers to avoid unnecessary loss of lives,”emphasized Inspector Mahoko.
