Funding Crisis Forces Deaf Zimbabwe Trust to Suspend Key Programs

By Connect Stories Africa Reporter

The Deaf Zimbabwe Trust (DZT), a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering people with disabilities, particularly the deaf community, is struggling to keep its programs running due to a severe funding shortfall.

The crisis stems from a U.S. Executive Order issued by former President Donald Trump, which led to cuts in foreign aid. As a result, DZT has been forced to reduce staff and suspend crucial programs that support skills development and financial inclusion for youth with disabilities.

Impact on Programs and Economic Empowerment

In a statement, DZT highlighted the devastating impact of the funding cuts.

“The organization has experienced a substantial reduction in funding, which has directly affected staffing levels and overall operational capacity. The cessation of funding has led to the suspension of crucial programs, including entrepreneurship training and informal apprenticeship opportunities,” the statement read.

These programs were vital in equipping young people with disabilities with essential skills and pathways to financial independence. Without them, many now face increased barriers to employment and self-sufficiency, worsening the gap between disabled and non-disabled youth.

“The opportunities to equalize economic prospects between youths with disabilities and those without have been lost,” the statement added.

Seeking Solutions Amid Crisis

In response, DZT is exploring alternative strategies to sustain its operations. The organization is looking to leverage technology and strengthen community partnerships to continue providing support to its beneficiaries.

“By implementing these strategies, DZT aims not only to mitigate the impact of the funding cuts but also to ensure that its mission of empowering youths with disabilities continues to thrive,” the organization said.

Despite the setbacks, DZT remains committed to its cause, emphasizing resilience and innovation as it works to create lasting change for the people it serves.
