The Government has gazetted the Electoral Amendment Act which will see, those convicted of any criminal offence within a period of 12 months before the sitting of the Nomination Court, being disqualified from seeking election as councillors or members of the National Assembly.
The government also gazetted the Children’s Amendment Act under which a child is now referred to as any person under the age of 18.
The laws were gazetted this Wednesday in terms of Section 131 of the Zimbabwean Constitution.
Most of the provisions in the Electoral Amendment Act will not, however take legal effect in the forthcoming polls since the law was passed when President Mnangagwa had already gazetted August 23, 2023, as the date for harmonized elections.
