In a harrowing incident that unfolded at Pamumvuri bus terminus in Shurugwi, a 19-year-old woman was apprehended by brave members of the public after she kidnapped a helpless three-month-old baby girl.

Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmannuel Mahoko, confirmed the distressing incident which unfolded on 22 January 2024 at approximately 1515 hours.

The victim of this heart-wrenching crime is 31-year-old Charity Machau, a devoted mother from the Gutsaruzhinji co-operative in Shurugwi.

Engaged in selling green mealies, Machau had momentarily placed her precious bundle of joy on a nearby table whilst engaging in her business affairs.

It was during this fleeting moment that the unthinkable occurred, forever shattering the sanctuary of this peaceful community.

According to reports, a stranger named Rudo Jakarasi, hailing from Mbizo in Kwekwe, approached Machau with an urgent plea.

Appearing desperate and lacking a cellphone, Jakarasi implored Machau to lend her device, claiming to have lost hers on a bus. With a rare display of kindness, Machau handed over her phone, oblivious to the danger that lurked beneath Jakarasi’s facade of helplessness.

Unbeknownst to Machau, the moment she turned her back, Jakarasi disappeared with both the borrowed cellphone and her vulnerable bundle of joy.

The horrifying discovery sent shockwaves through Machau’s heart as panic consumed her.

Desperately scouring the bus terminus for her missing child, Machau rallied the support of fellow vendors who joined in the frantic search and rescue mission.

In a stroke of collective bravery, the suspect was intercepted along the Gweru-Zvishavane road as the courageous members of the public apprehended her.

The baby, miraculously unharmed, was swiftly recovered, providing a fleeting sense of relief within the devastated community.

Following the harrowing incident Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, has warned members of the public to exercise caution when engaging with strangers, urging them to remain vigilant even in seemingly innocuous circumstances.

He emphasized that predators often exploit moments of vulnerability to strike, leaving traumas that haunt communities for years to come.
