Councillor Giwa’s open letter to the Electorate ahead of August 2023 Elections

Published in Connect Stories Election News

Let me start by greeting all the people of Gweru.

Permit me also to thank also the stakeholders whom l worked with tirelessly during the past years serving as councillor.

There was no shortage of attempt in making the environment of the locals l have been serving.

I thank you all for the support you unconditionally gave me.

As l wind up my term as a councillor,l wish to apeal to you again that,in this coming election it offers us another great opportunity to elect a hardworking councillor.A people centered councillor(councillor wavanhu)

I encourage everyone who is a registered voter to cast his/her vote in the next plebiscite.

Bad leaders are elected by good voters who don’t vote, but in reality there’s no such thing as not voting. You either vote by not voting or by staying at home on the voting day.

Your political power lies in your vote.Vote the candidate that makes you stay engaged even long after the election.

Ward 18,l submit myself to you.According to the new delimitation boundaries, the area covers CBD, Railways, Shamrock Park, heavy industries, light industries, show ground area ZRP Mtaps and Mtapa area.

Suffice to say,as ward 18 Gweru urban, you have said it loud and clear and l heeded your call for me to run as an independent candidate, after democratic political space was shut in my face, which decision to run for office was influenced by the passion to work unconditionally for you.

Absolutely,l am a tried and tested hard working councillor,my gumboots and safety shoes footprints are unmistakeably traceable.

A painter can easily be identified with the paint droppings on his shoes, likewise a hard working hands on councillor can be identified with the different sand dust colours on his shoes.

My parents,my elders, brothers and sisters l am ready to roll up my shirt sleeves and offer improved service delivery to ward 18 Gweru urban CBD.

Ward 18 CBD, you believe that someone like me who is not animated with enthnicity can make this ward a better place to cohabitate and work in.

I have done due diligence and feasibility study in terms of the new delimitation boundaries and am ready for the challenge, that’s my commitment to you.

I shall come up with councillor’s representatives in every corner of this ward who will be ready for this challenge.

Gweru City Council has a vision of becoming a sustainable prosperous city of choice by 2030 which is a tributary to the mission statement to provide quality service to residents, clients and stakeholders.

In this regard if you vote for me again,as Gweru City Fathers, if we are to remain loyal to the service charter, then Gweru will not be the same again in the next 5 years.

Hamadzangu,l am quite alive to the challenges that the CBD is facing. Its not lost on me that the high density area within the ward has its own challenges but l promise to equally tackle them head on.

I also want to prioritize CBD drainage system which is worrisome during rain season.

Vending, both in CBD and our suburbs,is a multi million dollar business and l wish to bring sanity and promote a good working environment between vendors and all stakeholders in the selling industry thus eliminating running battles with law enforcement personnel.

As for robbot traffic lights in CBD,if you vote for me l will make Gweru City Council realise that the City Status becomes a mockery if CBD traffic lights are not functional.

On the other hand direction sign posts and vivid signage puts a value addition towards becoming a City of Choice by 2030.

In that regard l am of the view that local tertiary institutions e.g Gweru Polytec can be engaged to provide a linear extension of their electrical faculty through student attachees manpower boost to help maintain or install traffic lights in CBD.

Decongestion of traffic using via mambo Matobo road will be among the top priorities, where it can achieved by dualisation of the portion between mtapa cemetery roundabout and Mambo Total fuel filling station.

An access road can be constructed on the then cycle track adjacent to Mtapa cemetery thus creating swift traffic passage from CBD.

As progressive people of Gweru City,l think the bottom up approach system is not conducive in terms of good service delivery.

We should see more of everyone practically on the ground which has a positive net effect. It stimulates progress and motivates workforce.

In the same vein,if you vote and reElect me l will truly and honestly represent you in council.

I would be a candidate who will not build ‘the great China wall’ between you and council, but to give an honest representation in council.

I also hold the view of connecting the ward with communities which have better ldeas or good standard of living to spark some inspired new solutions.

I also hold the view of setting up partnership workshops within the ward to ensure we as community identify the resources of capable persons to tackle the challenges of good service delivery and development capably and meaningfully at local government level.

Waste removal service has to be improved, clean up the streets, establish community workshops with tools and facilities for affordable hire by local people who wish to work for themselves or provide onsight training for unemployed people.

I am committed to do things differently in our ward and am committing myself to achieve results as soon as l assume next council councillor’s duties.

Hamadzangu,l am ready to be councillor and l fully understand what this mean.A councillor’s job is to make sure zvichemo nezvishuviro zvavanhu zvasvitswa nekunzwikwa and to build a bridge between the community and council.

Hamadzangu mukandisarudza tichasevenza these progressively to make this ward a better place to stay and achieve better standar of living and it starts with a Vote,Your Vote!

Sometimes it takes a while to recognise that someone has got a special ability to get us to believe in ourselves and tie that belief to our highest order, and to imagine that together we can do great things.

In those rare moments when that someone comes along,we need to put aside all our differences and reach out for what we know is possible.

My parents,my friends brothers and sisters,l would be honoured to have your support and kindly ask for your vote in the coming election for ward 18 CBD.

It will be an honour to represent you in council and am running for elections because l care for you and my priority is to fix our new boundary community issues and look forward to serving you and driving ward 18 CBD in the right direction.

What is my vision:

My vision is of a democratic inclusiveness and prosperous ward which promote a union of interests and agreement of ideas making our ward environmentally friendly and progress oriented ward keeping abreast with modern living.

I thank you

Godfrey Giwa (aspiring independent ward 18 Gweru urban council
