The City of Gweru (COG) recently unveiled its master plan, a comprehensive 20-year strategy focused on reshaping the urban environment and expanding the city’s boundaries.
The document which is now open for public inspection, proposes the establishment of a new Central Business District (CBD) and the relocation of the Gweru Sports Club to the city’s outskirts.
Additionally, the suburbs of Woodlands and Hertfordshire, which were previously managed by the Vungu Rural District Council, will now come under the jurisdiction of the Gweru City Council.
In compliance with a mandate from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, Gweru’s city council is among 86 local authorities that have submitted their plans.
In an interview, COG Acting Town Clerk Livingston Churu highlighted the city’s goal to also introduce three new hotels as part of its preparations for the upcoming Cricket World Cup.
The government has expressed strong support for Gweru’s developmental vision, urging community members, businesses, and leaders to engage in this consultation process.
“It’s now open for everyone—the business community, the church, and residents—to come and make their concerns known,” stated Honourable Owen Ncube, the Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution.
