Kariba-Kariba District is grappling with a cholera outbreak that has resulted in five confirmed cases and one death in the Gatshe Gatshe area.
The deceased has been identified as Cherity Muzavazi (35) from Bindura, who had traveled to the region to conduct fish business. The distressing news was confirmed by Kariba District Coordinator Aneli Desmond Gumbochuma.
In a statement regarding the outbreak, Gumbochuma highlighted the critical importance of hygiene and public health. “Our district medical team is on the ground to respond to emergencies, and all positive cases are being treated. Let’s all remain calm during this trying time,” she urged.
She called on residents to adhere to stringent hygiene practices and to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest clinic if they experience any symptoms of illness.
The District Civil Protection Unit is mobilizing resources and is appealing for assistance from various sectors, including corporate entities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), individuals, and religious groups. “We welcome any form of assistance as we try to contain the situation in Gatshe Gatshe,” Gumbochuma added, emphasizing the community’s need for support.
The district faces urgent requirements to manage the outbreak effectively and to support families affected by the disease. These needs include:
- Food for Camp: Essential supplies needed to feed those in temporary shelters.
- Adequate Shelter: Providing safe housing for displaced individuals.
- Hygiene Supplies: Vital for maintaining sanitation standards in the community.
- Fuel for Emergency Health Teams: To ensure that medical teams can operate efficiently in the field.
- Borehole Leather Cups and Accessories: Necessary for ensuring access to clean water and hygiene.
As authorities work diligently to monitor and control the outbreak, community members are encouraged to remain vigilant and prioritize sanitation.
Cooperation with health officials is essential to prevent further spread of the disease.
Local leaders are also urged to disseminate critical information regarding cholera prevention and treatment, reinforcing the message that swift action can save lives.
The community’s cooperation is crucial in navigating this public health challenge and ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.
As the situation develops, health and safety remain the top priority for Kariba District’s authorities, who are committed to providing ongoing support and resources during this crisis.
