The mining community of Shurugwi was rocked by not just one, but two gruesome murders within a span of 12 hours on the 8th and 9th November 2023.
The shocking incidents took place at, Wonderer Mine and Gutsaruzhinji, leaving residents terrified.
In the first incident on 8 November 2023, at around 9:00 pm, Vital Mine, Wonderer, Brighton Vhudzijena, a 25-year-old man from Village Hakurimwi, Chief Nyakunhuwa, Jerera in Zaka, met a tragic end after explosives were detonated in a wooden cabin he had sought refuge in.
A gang of unidentified assailants invaded their mine , armed with an arsenal of weapons and explosives.
In a bid to escape, Brighton’s brother, Fanuel Vhudzijena, fled the scene, while Brighton sought refuge in a nearby wooden cabin.
The ruthless gang tied the cabin door with a wire and set off explosives, resulting in a devastating explosion that engulfed the cabin in flames.
The following morning, Fanuel returned to discover his brother severely burnt and wounded.
Brighton was immediately rushed to Shurugwi District Hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries on 9 November 2023.
In the second incident, at Gutsaruzhinji Co-operative, a dispute over mining operations turned deadly.
On 9 November 2023, at approximately 9:30 am, three men identified as Munyaradzi Hapazari of ZBS Shurugwi, Gashia Muchena, and Ndumiso Chidaushe arrived at Gutsaruzhinji Cooperative seeking revenge.
They came across Tafadzwa Nkata (25) Nkata from Village 10, Sosombe 1, under Chief Ntabeni in Zhombe and Nhamo Mapiye, who were in the process of processing their gold ore, the group fired two warning shots into the air.
Terrified, Nkata and Mapiye made a desperate escape, but their pursuers quickly closed in on them.
Sadly, Nkata was brutally assaulted to death with axes, machetes and other sharp objects.
The trio fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of blood and fear.
Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed both incidents and investigations are ongoing.
As investigations into these chilling murders continue, authorities urge anyone with information related to the two Shurugwi cases to come forward and assist in the pursuit of justice.
“Investigations are underway and we also invite all those with information regarding two Shurugwi murder cases to help us,” said Mahoko.
The community is also encouraged to engage their local police stations and establish community policing initiatives tailored to their specific circumstances in a collective effort to prevent such heinous crimes.
“Communities are welcome to engage their local Police station and draw community policing initiatives relevant to their situation in an effort to prevent crime,” he added.
