Abandoned Newborn Baby Rescued From Shurugwi Forest

In a shocking incident that has left the community of Surprise Mining area in Shurugwi in disbelief, a baby girl was rescued by two good samaritans after she was abandoned by her mother in a forest.

The incident took place at around 0700 hours, on 1 February 2024, leaving many questions unanswered as the search for the infant’s mother continues.

The distressing discovery was made by two female juveniles, aged 17 and 11, who had been sent from a nearby Johanne Masowe church shrine to fetch water from a nearby pool.

As they embarked on their routine task, they were startled by the sound of a baby’s cries coming from a nearby forest.

Intrigued, the girls quickly investigated the source of the distress and were horrified to find a naked infant lying near a disused mine pit, with scattered clothes surrounding her.

Acting swiftly, the teenagers made the compassionate decision to rush the abandoned baby to the shrine, seeking immediate assistance and notifying the authorities of the shocking find.

Upon receiving the distressing report, the local police from ZRP Shurugwi promptly attended the scene to investigate the matter further.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the authorities wasted no time in ensuring the welfare and safety of the infant.

The baby girl was subsequently taken to Shurugwi District Hospital for immediate medical attention, where she is now receiving the care she desperately needs.

Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident.

In light of this troubling case, the police are calling upon the public’s assistance in shedding light on the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of this innocent child.

They are urging anyone with information pertaining to the identity of the infant’s mother or any details that could aid the investigation to come forward and approach any police station.

“We are appealing to members the public for information which can assist in locating the mother of the infant and shade light into the case to approach any police station,” said Inspector Mahoko
